The "Rock 'n Roll" War
Here is a list of the most
popular songs played during Caspers Tour of Duty between 1965 -
1971.
Veterans heard many of these
songs played daily over the Armed Forces Vietnam Network (AFVN) Radio.
This 24 hour radio station was created by the U.S. Armed Forces to
entertain the American troops from the Delta to the DMZ (I am sure
the VC also enjoyed listening it). The programming included all
types of music from rock & roll, country, jazz & classical music.
This should bring back a few
really good memories...

*** anti-war songs ***
There were many anti-war song
written during the 1960's. I doubt that any of these songs were
ever played on AFVN.
One of the more famous protest
songs was performed by Country Joe & The Fish
I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-
To-Die
Rag
Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.
Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Gotta go out and get those reds
The only good commie is the one who's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.
Huh!
Well, come on Wall Street, don't move slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go.
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.
Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, don't hesitate,
Send 'em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.
And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

EVE OF DESTRUCTION
Barry McGuire
The eastern world, it is explodin',
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'.
You're old enough to kill, but not for votin',
You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'.
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'.
Cho: But you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
Ah, you don't believe we're on the Eve of Destruction.
Don't you understand what I'm trying to say?
Can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today.
If the button is pushed there's no runnin' away.
They'll be no one to save with the world in a grave.
Take a look around ya boy, it's bound to scare ya boy,
Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin'.
I'm sittin' here just contemplating'.
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation.
Handful of senators can't pass legislation.
And marches alone can't bring integration,
When human respect is disintegratin'.
This whole crazy world's just too frustratin'.
Think of all the hate there is in Red China,
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama.
You may leave here for four days in space
But when you return it's the same old place.
The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace;
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace.
Hate your next door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace.
